Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of gamma-glutamylcysteinylglycine and is the most abundant endogenous antioxidant within eukaryotic cells, maintaining intracellular redox homeostasis. As both a direct radical scavenger and a cofactor for antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), GSH plays a fundamental role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS), detoxification of xenobiotics, and supporting phase II hepatic metabolism. Research applications include investigation of oxidative stress pathways in neurodegenerative, hepatic, and metabolic disease models.
